Penelope Cruz Sanchez

Penelope Cruz Sanchez was born in Madrid to Eduardo Cruz, a retailer and Encarna Sanchez, hairdresser. As a young child she was an obsessive performer who would recreate commercials from the television to entertain of her parents. But, she decided to focus her efforts on dance. After nine years of classical ballet classes in Spain's National Conservatory she was able to continue her dance training under the guidance of a number of famous dancers. When she was 15, she heeded her true call when she topped over 300 other girls at an audition at a talent agency. The resultant contract secured her several roles in Spanish television shows and music videos, which set the stage for a career on the big screen. Cruz made her movie debut with The Greek Labyrinth (1993). (The Greek Labyrinth). Then, she appeared briefly in Framed (1992) by Timothy Dalton. Her third film, Belle Epoque (1992) was an Oscar-winning film in which she played one four sisters who were competing to win the love of an attractive deserter army soldier. The film also garnered many Goyas that are the Spanish equivalent to the Academy Awards. Her resume continued to grow by about three or four films every year. Soon Cruz was the leading lady in Spanish cinema. Live Flesh (1997) (Live Flesh) offered her the chance to work with renowned Spanish director Pedro Almodovar (who would later be her ticket to international fame), and the same year she was the lead actress in the thriller/drama/mystery/sci-fi film Open Your Eyes (1997), a huge hit in Spain that earned eight Goyas (though none for Cruz). The luck of her life changed in 1998 when her movie-industry comedy La Nina De Tus Ojos (1998) received her the Best Actress Goya. After a few more attempts in English-language films Cruz's first international breakthrough was in Almodovar's All About My Mother (1999) where she played an unchaste but very well-meaning nun. After the film was flooded with accolades and awards Cruz suddenly found herself highly sought-after across both sides of the Atlantic.
